Of course I write after the apparent death of bin Laden in his bedroom.
Is the killing of bin Laden progressive? It seems like a gangsterism, fighting over Saudi, and Pakistani sovereignty and crude. No nation is supposed to have sovereignty in the new world order, (except perhaps Great Britain, China and Germany). The new world order is what the right tends to call it and while that may not be the most scientific formulation they are obviously responding to a real loss of national sovereignty.
More informative is the way Obama has played the Emperor by concentrating more and more executive power in his hands, much like the Bush family did. The obvious correlates of this are his imperialist wars in Iraq, Afghanistan, Yemen, Somalia, Palestine, etc. Add to this the imperialist interventions meant to crush the Arab spring in Libya, Syria and now in machinations in those nations where the U.S. lost control like Egypt and Tunisia. Of course the U.S. and Obama continue to back the terrorism of Bahrain, the emirates and the Saudis.
The Emperor Obama reserves the right to murder U.S. Citizens by secret order. It doesn't get any more Orwellian, Kafkaesque or reactionary than that. Obama is Mr. Judge, Jury and Executioner, especially now that he can run covert operations with a joystick in the comfort of the White House.
That is fascistic and not progressive. Obama the fascistic emperor.
Of course certain issues give him a veneer of being progressive. He doesn't want to burn gays at the stake and has helped piecemeal advances for gays in the military.
Of course Obama has done nothing to suggest a socialist or anarchist alternative and all his efforts seem to be in the direction of continuing the same system but now all debt and all investment will be guaranteed by the working class. They will pay the debts of the super rich and in some cases, like nuclear power, will also provide the capital and there will be no compensation for nuclear disasters, except perhaps for the investors.
Obama loves all this stuff so you have to call him a reactionary overall will some progressive social characteristics that really don't change the overall toxicity of his politics.
